Why Sleep Is So Important

Sleep and rest are so important for the whole well-being of the body. There are many studies that show Americans of all ages are sleep-deprived. Most of us are probably guilty of not getting enough sleep every night and we pay for it with how our bodies function. Today I want to discuss 5 ways to get better sleep.

5 Ways To Get Better Sleep

According to Harvard Health, experts recommend at least 7 hours of sleep a night for most people; however, some may need more or even less. Those who do not get enough sleep each night have a higher risk of health issues, like diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Let’s not forget how we feel when we get up.. groggy, lack of focus, and wanting to eat all of the bad things we encounter.

So, let’s jump into 5 ways to get better sleep so you can avoid all of those negative effects on your body.

Relax Before Bed

Find a soothing nighttime routine to set the stage for better sleep. Can’t think of anything? Try these: Read a book. Read your little one a book. Take a warm bath—10 minutes of restorative yoga. Meditate. Listen to soothing music. Pick 1 or 2 things to do and start making it a routine or ritual, if you will. Speaking of rituals, take a peek at my morning ritual blog to start your day with intention.

Set a Schedule

Having an inconsistent sleep schedule can wreak so much havoc on your wellbeing. I know you have a lot going on; who doesn’t? I see you struggling to balance it all. Setting a schedule for your sleep will help you. Even if you have to put the whole household to bed when you go, do it. Going to bed and getting up on the same schedule every day will help you get better sleep.

Exercise Regularly

I know no one wants to hear the word exercise in the same sentence as sleep, but research shows solid evidence that exercise does help you fall asleep more quickly and improves sleep quality. There is no real right or wrong time to exercise, but many people avoid exercise right before bed as it can keep you up rather than help you sleep. Pick a time that works for you and get your body moving.

Deep Breathing

In bed, take long, deep, easy breaths, letting your mind and body relax. Breathwork will put your body into rest and digest mode and let your whole body know it is time to relax. Just 10 minutes of breathing can be enough to help you sleep like a baby.

Avoid Stimulants Before Bed

Avoid food and drinks with caffeine before bed. You may have to cut yourself off from things like coffee late in the afternoon to avoid sleep disturbances. You also will want to avoid alcohol. Alcohol can at first make you feel sleepy but can have the opposite effect and keep you awake.

In Conclusion

Sleep is pretty important. It keeps us moving and gives us the energy to get stuff done. I hope these recommendations will help you start better sleeping patterns. Your mind and body will thank you.
